Asia is key to developing FSRU market

Shipyards in Asia are seeing new opportunities for floating storage and regasification facilities and thus play an important role in building these FSRUs. Energy growth is also predicted to be higher in Asia than the rest of the world, with imports in the first four months of 2022 at 88.05 million tonnes compared to Europe’s 45.27 million tonnes, according to OEDigital.

According to GIIGNL Annual Report 2022, Asia accounts for having built a majority of the 48 FSRU fleet at the end of 2021. Of the 48 FSRUs, 97% were built by Asian shipbuilders.

Singapore's Advantage

Singapore has long been the world’s largest hub for conventional bunker fuels, and in 2021 saw 50,000 mtof LNG bunker sales in the first year of making the service available. As one of the largest conversion hubs, companies that are involved in the entire LNG value chain are choosing Singapore to anchor their headquarters.

Alongside strong governmental support for LNG bunkering, Singapore leverages on an advantageous geographical location, thus fast becoming the most important player in Asia’s LNG realm.
