In 2023, Vietnam and the Philippines both opened their first LNG import terminals, signalling a new era for the fuel in Southeast Asia. Before 2030, the project pipeline for Southeast Asia will see 24m t/y of new LNG import capacity added.

Southeast Asian LNG infrastructure was largely concentrated in the region’s largest gas producers, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, before 2023. With Vietnam and the Philippines now in the picture, the new markets are expected to be the site of most growth in LNG import capacity. While these are important milestones for Southeast Asian LNG, there are still some delays. LNG in the region may be complicated, but the infrastructure buildout is still pushing ahead.
